As I sat on the top of a cliff looking out over the ocean, I realized that I was my happiest when I was outdoors in the natural world. A week later, I was a volunteer for the National Park Service. Within 6 months, I was enrolled in a conservation biology graduate program. And within a year, I was working under the head biologist at that very same national park.

One of the great joys of my job at the park, was spending time looking at the landscape and keeping a photographic record of my work. I enjoyed it so much, that I discovered I had a serious passion for photography. It wasn’t long before I bought my first DSLR to take with me to the countryside to record my view of the world around me. I am particularly fond of landscape photography, but I am always keeping an eye out for interesting subject matter that reflects the interaction of organisms with their environment.

My love for photography has taken me around the world. Traveling from Olympia, Greece to Bergen, Sweden, I have been fortunate to see parts of the world through my very own eyes… as well as through the view in my Nikon D300. I am currently editing over 10,000 photos from my last trip. The process is slow as my love of the natural world has taken me to my current job working at the California Academy of Sciences. It serves as my most enjoyable professional opportunity to bring my passion for nature to the public. In the mean time, I also work nearly full time on my photography which includes the development of this site and service to help other photographers exhibit their passion for photography on the web.

I guess I’m not the first to say it, but my professional idol is Ansel Adams. I watched a PBS documentary one day on the Life of Ansel Adams, and it literally brought tears to my eyes. The single best thing I took away from the biography was when one of the speakers said that Ansel Adams was a true American Patriot. He loved the land of his country and worked very hard through out his life to fight for the preservation of places likes Yosemite National Park for all future generations to enjoy. He was an American Patriot and a hero with a camera not a gun. Americans could learn a lot from this man’s life, and thus he is the inspiration behind my work. He really made me think about how we define a hero in our world, and it saddens me that we idolize violence over art and nature.
